From Mexico City or Guadalajara to Yelapa: flight, boat, and what you need to know
If you are leaving Mexico City or Guadalajara and want a clear path to Yelapa, the route is simple: a domestic flight to Puerto Vallarta (PVR), then a boat. There is no road into the village. That is not an odd obstacle; it is how the Cabo Corrientes coast works.
We own Casa Gratitud, a boat-access villa in Yelapa. Our hosting family meets guests in the village. This guide stays practical and light. The villa is typically open for guest stays October through April in the high season window.
Step 1: the domestic flight
From Mexico City (AICM or AIFA) and from Guadalajara (GDL) there are frequent flights to PVR on national carriers. Confirm same-day schedules and fares on the airline site when you book. For a same-day arrival in Yelapa, aim to land in Vallarta before midday when you can. Night arrivals almost always mean overnight in Puerto Vallarta and a boat the next day.
Soft bags help. You will lift them onto a panga and walk a bit after.
Step 2: from the airport to the boat
Usual options when the port allows navegación menor:
- Boca de Tomatlán: taxi from the airport, then a water taxi toward Yelapa. Often the shortest hop on the water.
- Los Muertos Pier (Romantic Zone): scheduled boats toward Yelapa at several times depending on the season. Confirm with the boat operators the day you travel.
- Ferry Vallarta (when it is running): leaves the Marina / Muelle Espigón area on published days (in high season they have announced Thursday and Saturday). In low season the operator's own site has shown a pause. Confirm on ferryvallarta.com.mx before you lock the plan.
If small-boat traffic is closed for weather (as with notices tied to Hurricane Rachel in late September 2026), the water taxi waits. That is Capitanía de Puerto / Semar direction, not village improvisation. Confirm the same day.

Cash in the village
In the village, cash in pesos is still king for boats, snacks, and many small services. Cards are used more often in Vallarta; in Yelapa do not assume a terminal on every corner. Withdraw at a reputable ATM in PVR.
How to build the day from Mexico City or Guadalajara
1. Morning flight into PVR.
2. Taxi to Boca or Los Muertos.
3. Boat to Yelapa while there is still daylight.
4. Arrive at the villa with the hosting family guiding you in.
If your flight runs late, tell us. We will set up a Vallarta plan B without making you feel you ruined the trip.
For long weekends and holiday bridges
Mexican puentes fill boats and lodging. Book early, especially around national holidays, fall long weekends, and Día de Muertos season at the end of October. If you are coming for Día de Muertos programming in Puerto Vallarta and sleeping in Yelapa, mix nights with care: Malecón evening events do not always line up with the last panga.
What to bring (short version)
Sunscreen, light clothes, and a dry bag for your phone on the boat. If you travel in winter, the bay also enters whale season; see Whale Season in Yelapa if you want to pair the village with coastal sightings. You do not need special gear to get here: you need time, cash, and a willingness to enjoy the ride.
Plan your stay
When you want to look at dates and the villa, go to yelapacasagratitud.com. Write us with your PVR landing time. We will help you choose Boca, Los Muertos, or the ferry based on what is actually running that day.
Yelapa is easy to love: sea, village, and a slower clock. The boat leg is the right kind of ticket.
