Whale Season in Yelapa: What to Expect at Casa Gratitud

Every winter, humpback whales use Banderas Bay to mate, give birth, and nurse their calves. Casa Gratitud sits on Yelapa’s south shore, with ocean-view terraces above the village. Here is the honest version: no guarantees, no invented counts, and free sightings first.

Yelapa shares the same bay as Puerto Vallarta, Nuevo Vallarta, La Cruz, and Punta de Mita. The villa is open October through April. Whale sightings are a highlight inside that window, strongest roughly from mid-December through March, with January and February usually the peak months.

Licensed commercial whale-watching in Banderas Bay is typically framed as December 8 through March 23. Those dates are useful context and can change with the official notice. Early arrivals may appear before the opening, and some whales linger into early April. After the official close, authorized whale-watching tours are not permitted even if a straggler is nearby.

December is not too early. It is the opening of the season, and activity builds through the month. If whales are your only reason to travel, January or February is the stronger bet. If you want whales plus holiday timing and a quieter bay, December can be a smart choice.

Guests often see whales without booking a paid tour. The water taxi ride to Yelapa is a natural viewing opportunity, and the villa terraces offer a quiet lookout when whales are in the bay. You may see blows, slow travel, a fluke, pectoral-fin slaps, or mother-and-calf pairs. Binoculars help. Full breaches and close approaches are never promised.

When you want to get closer on the water, the hosting family, has their own boats and can arrange whale watching, fishing, and swimming trips during the season. Ask them what is running for your dates and confirm the current price. We do not publish excursion prices here because fuel, group size, and season can change them.

If you use an outside operator, choose a licensed boat and stay within the official season. Respect distance and speed rules, never swim with whales, and let the animals choose how close they come.

Casa Gratitud offers an elevated jungle setting, not beachfront. Its terraces face the bay, with local hosts and a boat-access arrival. Winter on the south shore is coffee, ocean air, and, when the bay cooperates, a spot on the horizon.
