Where to Stay in Yelapa: Areas and Vacation Rentals

Deciding where to stay in Yelapa shapes the whole trip. This car-free fishing village on the southern edge of Banderas Bay has no hotel strip and no road in, so every stay feels a little different: a cabaña steps from the sand, a room in the village above the cafes, a quiet home along the river, or a vacation rental high on the hillside with the whole bay below. Here is how the areas compare as of October 2026, and what to check before you book a Yelapa vacation rental.

Where to stay in Yelapa: the main areas

On the beach

The main beach is where the water taxis land and where the palapa restaurants line the sand. Staying here puts you closest to the boats, the swimming, and the sunset. Days are lively while the day trippers are in town, and evenings turn calm once the last boats leave for Puerto Vallarta. Beach stays tend to be simple cabañas and small hotels.

In the village

Yelapa's village sits west of the river, a web of hillside paths with cafes, taco stands, small markets, and family-run restaurants. You are close to food and to the trail up to Cola de Caballo, the waterfall about 15 minutes' walk from the beach. Expect roosters, music, and village life, which many guests count as part of the charm.

Along the river

Upriver, homes trade sea views for shade, gardens, and the sound of water. It is the quietest part of town and a good fit for longer stays and writers. The walk to the beach and restaurants is longer, so a flashlight for the evening walk home helps, since Yelapa has no streetlights.

On the hillsides above the bay

The hillsides hold most of Yelapa's ocean-view homes. You get the breeze, the wide views of the bay, and quiet nights, with the beach a short walk below. This is where most Yelapa vacation rentals sit, from small casitas to whole houses with terraces.

Hotel, cabaña, or a vacation rental?

A small hotel or cabaña works well for a night or two, especially for a first look at Yelapa. For a week or more, a family, or friends traveling together, a vacation rental usually makes more sense: you get a kitchen, separate bedrooms, outdoor space of your own, and room to settle in. Snowbirds and remote workers often choose a rental for exactly that reason.

What to check before you book a Yelapa vacation rental

  • Arrival from the pier. Ask how you reach the house with luggage and whether someone meets your boat. Our boat guide from Puerto Vallarta covers the ride itself, and the go2yelapa transport page keeps current water taxi times.
  • Breeze or air conditioning. Many Yelapa homes are built open to the breeze rather than air-conditioned. Check which kind you are booking and when you are traveling.
  • Who is on call. Find out who helps if something comes up during your stay, and how you reach them.
  • Kitchen and groceries. The village has small markets and many places take cash pesos only. Yelapa has no ATMs, so bring pesos from Puerto Vallarta.
  • Sleeping layout. Count real bedrooms and beds, not just the guest maximum.
  • Wi-Fi and season. If you plan to work, ask about the internet. Some homes rent only part of the year, so check open dates early for the winter season.

Where Casa Gratitud fits

Casa Gratitud is an ocean-view vacation rental on the hillside above the bay. It has two bedrooms, sleeps up to 8, and spreads across three terraces that all face the water. The house is open to the breeze, with fast Wi-Fi and a full kitchen, and it is pet friendly. Our host family lives in Yelapa village, meets guests at the pier, helps with luggage, and is on hand for anything you need during your stay. In winter you may even watch humpbacks from the terrace; see our whale season guide.

See the house in the photo tour, and read more about the village in About Yelapa.
