Día de Muertos in Puerto Vallarta 2026 from a Yelapa base: Recuérdame, boat timing, and a calm overnight plan

Late October into early November is one of the most meaningful travel windows in Mexico. Puerto Vallarta puts ofrendas, Catrinas, music, and night walks on the Malecón and in Centro. Yelapa sits a boat ride south. Many guests like the mix: festival energy in PV, then sleep in a quiet cove.

We own Casa Gratitud in Yelapa. Evening parades and last pangas do not always line up, so boat timing matters as much as the program.

Two layers of programming in 2026

1) Festival de las Ánimas (statewide Jalisco frame) Reporting in late Sep 2026 described a coordinated Festival de las Ánimas across more than 11 Jalisco municipalities, roughly Oct 24 to Nov 2. Puerto Vallarta's local spin has been framed around the bay and fishing culture (sometimes called La Orilla de las Ánimas in English-language coverage). Expect ofrendas, Catrinas, and evening cultural events. Full PV activity lists were still being released in some write-ups as of posting time. Confirm the locked calendar on visitpuertovallarta.com and state tourism notices before you go.

2) Festival "Recuérdame" (Puerto Vallarta's Día de Muertos festival) Local coverage of the II Festival Recuérdame pointed to roughly Oct 30 to Nov 3 (some cultural agendas extend through Nov 4). Highlights reported in Tribuna de la Bahía and related pieces include:

  • Monumental Catrina presence on the tourist corridor (structure reused with new styling; Guinness attempt not pursued in the mayor's comments for this year).

  • Music and dance in Plaza de Armas, Plaza Lázaro Cárdenas, and Los Arcos.

  • Cemetery programming at Panteón 5 de Diciembre (stories, murals, guided visits in past editions).

  • A major Día de Muertos parade on Mon Nov 2 around 5:00 p.m., with festival energy toward Los Muertos Pier. (In 2026, Nov 2 falls on Monday; older write-ups that said "Sunday Nov 2" matched a prior year.) Confirm exact route, start point, and the city's locked 2026 flyer before you plan around it.

  • Closing-style activity such as the dog walk "Huellitas del Más Allá" on Tue Nov 3 in one published rundown. (In 2026, Nov 3 falls on Tuesday.) Confirm on the final city flyer.

Treat every clock time above as a snapshot as of posting time. Verify against the city's final flyer before you lock boats and lodging.

Why a Yelapa overnight base works

  • Mornings in Yelapa stay quiet. You recover from late PV nights.

  • You still reach Centro, the Malecón, and Los Muertos by boat plus short ground transport.

  • Couples and small family groups who want culture plus rest often prefer this over a full week only on the busy waterfront.

The main parade is in Puerto Vallarta, not Yelapa. You travel to the show, then travel home.

Boat timing

Water taxis and (when active) the ferry run on daylight-heavy schedules. A 5:00 p.m. parade on Nov 2 plus later concerts can push you past comfortable same-night returns to Yelapa. Useful schedule reference: Go 2 Yelapa - Water Taxis

Practical patterns guests use:

  1. Two-night Yelapa sandwich: boat to Yelapa on Oct 31 or Nov 1, day trip into PV for peak events, overnight again in Yelapa after an earlier return; or reverse with a PV hotel night on parade evening.

  2. Parade night in PV: stay in Zona Romántica or Centro the night of Nov 2, then boat to Yelapa the next morning when seas and schedules allow.

  3. Day trip only: leave Yelapa on an early boat, enjoy ofrendas and daytime programming, return on a mid-afternoon panga. You will miss some night events. That is a valid trade.

After weather events, confirm navegación menor the morning you move. See our port-status checklist post and Getting to Casa Gratitud.

Plan your stay

Puentes and long weekends book up. If Recuérdame week is your target, look at dates early on yelapacasagratitud.com and tell the hosting family which nights you need a PV late exit. We help you pick a boat plan that matches the real schedule, not an imaginary midnight panga.
