Searching for Yelapa hotels turns up a short list, and that is part of the appeal. This car-free fishing village on the south shore of Banderas Bay has no resort strip and no road in, so lodging here means small places: beach cabañas, a few boutique hotels on the hillside, a retreat center, and private houses. This guide helps you choose between a hotel and a house for your trip, as of October 21, 2026.
If you are still picking a part of town, start with our guide to where to stay in Yelapa, which compares the beach, the village, the river, and the hillsides. This post picks up from there.
What Yelapa hotels are like
Forget lobbies and elevators. Yelapa hotels are small, built by hand into the beach and the jungle, and open to the breeze. Expect a few rooms or palapa cabins, simple comforts, and a view.
- Beach cabañas and small hotels. These sit close to the sand and the pier, so you step out to the water, the palapa restaurants, and the sunset. They suit a first visit of a night or two.
- Boutique hillside hotels. Verana, a handmade boutique hotel on the jungle hillside, is one of the best known. Stays like this lean toward design, privacy, and long views.
- A retreat center with rooms. Pura Vida Wellness Retreat Center offers on-site rooms with its yoga and wellness programs, and also rents to retreat hosts. Our Yelapa yoga retreat guide covers this season's retreat dates.
Small places change hands and close for repairs, so check the hotel's own site or social pages for current details before you book. Big booking sites list Yelapa too, but a listing alone doesn't prove a place is open this season.
Hotel or private house: which fits your trip?
A hotel is a good pick when:
- You are staying one or two nights, or trying Yelapa for the first time
- You are traveling alone or as a couple and want meals handled
- You want staff on site at all hours
A private house usually wins when:
- You are staying four nights or more
- You are a family or a group of friends who want separate bedrooms and one shared space
- You want a kitchen, so you can cook with fish and fruit from the village
- You plan to work remotely or settle in for a month (our monthly stays guide covers longer visits)
- You want quiet nights and a terrace of your own
Cost works differently, too. A house rate covers the whole place, so splitting it among four to six people can compare well with paying for two or three hotel rooms.
What to ask before you book any Yelapa stay
- Arrival. Ask whether someone meets your boat and helps with luggage. Our guide on how to get to Yelapa from Puerto Vallarta by boat explains the piers, and go2yelapa's transport page lists current water taxi times. Boats run in daylight, so a late flight means a night in Puerto Vallarta and a morning boat.
- Breeze or air conditioning. Many places here are built open to the breeze. Check which kind you are booking.
- Meals. Hotels may include breakfast or run a restaurant. With a house, ask about groceries and whether someone can cook for you.
- Cash. Yelapa has no ATMs, and many small places take cash pesos only, so bring pesos from Puerto Vallarta.
- Wi-Fi. If you need to work, ask about the connection.
- Season. Some places open only part of the year. Our best time to visit Yelapa guide covers each month, whale season included.
Where Casa Gratitud fits
Casa Gratitud is a private house, not a hotel, with some of the comforts of one. It is a three-level, ocean-view home in the jungle above the bay, with two king bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. It sleeps 6 comfortably and up to 8 with rollaway beds. Three levels of terraces face the bay, and the house has a full kitchen, fast Wi-Fi, and natural ventilation in place of air conditioning. It is pet friendly.
What a house usually lacks is a front desk. Here, our host family fills that role: they meet you at the pier, help with luggage, and are on hand for anything you need during your stay. You get the space and privacy of a home with local help a message away.
See the rooms and terraces in the photo tour.
Plan your stay
If a hotel suits a quick first look, a house suits the trip you come back for. Casa Gratitud rents October through April. Check dates and rates and book direct at yelapacasagratitud.com.
