The best way to spend a day and night in Puerto Vallarta's Romantic Zone is on foot: a slow morning on Cuale Island and in the market, lunch on Basilio Badillo, an afternoon on Los Muertos Beach, sunset at the pier, and dinner and a show after dark. Then sleep in town and take a morning boat to Yelapa from the same beach.
The Romantic Zone (Zona Romántica), also called Old Town, is the cobblestone neighborhood just south of the Río Cuale. Puerto Vallarta's tourism board calls it an informal name rather than an official district, running from the river to the hillside streets of Amapas and Conchas Chinas, with Los Muertos Beach on its west side. Many Casa Gratitud guests spend a night here on the way in or out.
Morning: Cuale Island and the market
Start at Isla Río Cuale, the shaded island in the river between downtown (El Centro) and the Romantic Zone. Paths run under big trees past artisan stalls, a cultural center, and riverside cafés, and footbridges link it to both sides of town, including the swaying La Iguana suspension bridge.
Close by on Lázaro Cárdenas Street, the Emiliano Zapata municipal market is where locals shop for produce, seafood, and tortillas, with counters for tacos, enchiladas, and gorditas. Go in the morning and bring cash pesos.
On a Saturday in season, walk on to Lázaro Cárdenas Park for the Olas Altas Farmers Market. The tourism board lists it from November through May, 9 AM to 2 PM, with more than 100 regional vendors.
Lunch: Basilio Badillo, Restaurant Row
Basilio Badillo Street has been called Restaurant Row since the 1990s, and it still packs cafés, taco spots, and bistros into a few blocks. The tourism board's picks include Pancho's Takos (in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide), Joe Jack's Fish Shack, and La Dolce Vita. Afterward, wander Olas Altas Street and the side streets toward the river for murals, galleries, and small shops.
Afternoon: Los Muertos Beach and the Malecón
Spend the warm hours on Los Muertos Beach, the Romantic Zone's main beach, lined with beach clubs and loungers. If you'd rather keep walking, cross the river to the Malecón, the seaside boardwalk with its bronze sculptures, which runs north from the Río Cuale.
Sunset at the Los Muertos Pier
The beach faces west across Banderas Bay, so sunset is the main event. Walk out on the Los Muertos Pier, under its tall sail-shaped arch, and watch the sun go down over the water. The water taxis to Yelapa leave from this pier, so it's a handy chance to find it before your morning boat.
Night: dinner and a show
After dark the Romantic Zone is Puerto Vallarta's liveliest neighborhood. Head back to Basilio Badillo for dinner, then pick a show:
- Act2PV on Basilio Badillo has a main stage, a cabaret, and a piano bar.
- The Palm Cabaret and Bar on Olas Altas has staged musical theater, concerts, and drag shows for more than 20 years.
- Coco Cabaret on Madero Street is The Palm's newer sister venue.
Check each venue's site for the week's schedule and tickets. On a Wednesday evening in season, you can also cross the river for the Historic Center Art Walk, when downtown galleries open their doors; the Art Walk site lists the season's dates.
Morning boat to Yelapa
Boats between Puerto Vallarta and Yelapa run in daylight, so a night in the Romantic Zone pairs well with a morning boat. Water taxis leave from the Los Muertos Pier, and the ride takes about an hour. Times change with the season, so check the go2yelapa water taxi page and confirm at the pier. For every option, including the shorter ride from Boca de Tomatlán, read how to get to Yelapa from Puerto Vallarta by boat.
Going home, do it in reverse: an afternoon boat from Yelapa to Los Muertos, a last dinner in Old Town, and a morning flight.
Tips for the Romantic Zone
- Wear flat shoes with good grip; the cobblestones are uneven.
- Carry cash pesos for markets, taco stands, and taxis, and pick up enough for Yelapa, where most places take only cash and there are no ATMs.
- Pack light in a soft bag for the boat.
- See what's on during your dates in our Yelapa and Puerto Vallarta events guide.
