Is Yelapa LGBTQ+ friendly? Travel guide to Yelapa and Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico's best-known LGBTQ+ destinations, and Yelapa, a quiet car-free village a boat ride away, makes an easy, relaxed add-on. At Casa Gratitud, everyone is welcome.

Many guests spend a night or two in Puerto Vallarta's Zona Romántica on the way in or out, so this guide covers both ends of the trip: the scene in town, Pride, the legal basics, and what to expect in Yelapa.

Puerto Vallarta's official tourism board says the city has been one of the LGBT community's favorite places for more than 60 years. Islands magazine reports that it was named destination of the year at the 2023 LGBTQ+ Travel Awards.

The Zona Romántica

The heart of the scene is the Zona Romántica (Romantic Zone), the cobblestone old part of town around Playa Los Muertos. Islands quotes a travel writer who calls it "Latin America's biggest gayborhood," with everything from drag shows to dance clubs. During Pride, the street party takes over Calle Lázaro Cárdenas.

Playa Los Muertos and the gay beach

Playa Los Muertos is the Zona Romántica's main beach. Gay Guide Vallarta places the LGBTQ+ stretch less than a quarter mile south of the Los Muertos Pier, where beach clubs fly the rainbow flag. Blue Chairs is the long-time classic, and Mantamar Beach Club is a newer option with an infinity pool and DJs. Both appear in Out and About PV's 2026 Pride guide.

Here's a handy detail for Yelapa guests: water taxis to Yelapa also leave from the Los Muertos Pier, at least 55 minutes each way. Boca de Tomatlán, at the south end of town, has more and later departures and a shorter ride of about 30 minutes. Check current times with go2yelapa transport, and see our guide on how to get to Yelapa by boat.

When is Vallarta Pride?

Vallarta Pride happens in May. The 2026 festival ran May 17 to 24, with the parade on May 21 starting on the Malecón, according to the official Vallarta Pride site and GayPV. GayPV notes that organizers picked May on purpose, to stretch the tourist season past Semana Santa (Holy Week). The 2027 dates weren't posted when we checked, so watch the official site.

Pride falls just after Casa Gratitud's October to April season. During the season, the tourism board's events calendar lists Gay+ Mixers, a free weekly social open to LGBTQ+ people and allies, running from October 2026 into May 2027. For the rest of the season, see our Yelapa and Puerto Vallarta events guide.

Yes. In October 2022, Tamaulipas became the last of Mexico's 32 states to authorize same-sex marriage, the Associated Press reported (published by PBS NewsHour). Mexico's Supreme Court had already ruled in 2015 that state laws blocking it were unconstitutional.

What's Yelapa like for LGBTQ+ travelers?

Yelapa is a small fishing village on the south shore of Banderas Bay, reached only by boat. There are no cars, no ATMs, and no streetlights, and mules carry goods up the lanes. It isn't a nightlife town. Days here run to beach time, the waterfall walk, yoga, and long lunches at the palapa seafood restaurants on the sand. Music sometimes carries across the bay at night and usually ends by 10 PM.

A few practical notes:

  • Bring pesos. Most places take cash only, so get pesos from a bank ATM in Puerto Vallarta before the boat.
  • Plan boats for daylight. If you want a late night in the Zona Romántica, book a hotel night in town and take a morning boat to Yelapa.
  • Pick your pace. Our things to do in Yelapa guide covers the waterfalls, kayaking, and yoga.

Where can I find LGBTQ+ information for Puerto Vallarta?

These are the best places to start:

  • Vallarta Pride: the official site for Pride dates and events.
  • Out and About PV: a local LGBTQ+ publication with news and a directory of LGBTQ+-friendly businesses.
